The Complete Mexican Residency Guide
This guide covers the end-to-end process for obtaining Mexican temporary or permanent residency through the standard consulate pathway.
Part 1: Before You Apply
Gather 6 months of bank statements showing income or 12 months showing savings. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned entry date.
Part 2: The Consulate Appointment
Book an appointment at the nearest Mexican consulate. Required documents include: passport, bank statements, proof of address, and passport photos. The consulate will issue a visa sticker valid for 180 days.
Part 3: Entering Mexico
Enter Mexico using your visa sticker. At the port of entry, your passport will be stamped. You have 30 days from entry to complete the INM canje process.
Part 4: The INM Canje Visit
Visit your local INM office with all original documents and copies. You will be fingerprinted and photographed. Pay the government fee (approximately $40–60 USD).
Part 5: Collecting Your Card
Return to the INM office to collect your tarjeta de residente (residency card). Temporary cards are valid for 1 year and must be renewed annually for up to 4 years.
